Stand Down & Stand-Down Defined:

STAND DOWN: a) to go off duty, b) to withdraw from a contest, a position of leadership, or a state of alert or readiness

STAND-DOWN:  one part of the Department of Veterans Affairs’ efforts to provide services to homeless veterans.  Stand-Downs are typically one to three day events providing services to homeless Veterans such as food, shelter, clothing, health screenings, VA and Social Security benefits counseling, and referrals to a variety of other necessary services, such as housing, employment and substance abuse treatment.  Stand- Downs are collaborative events, coordinated between local VAs, other government agencies, and community agencies who serve the homeless.

The Art Blast  is a new addition to our Expo and Stand-Down this year - put together by a local artist who served in Afghanistan in 2003-2004 and is associated with the Ashlar Center for Narrative Arts in Hamilton, NY. The theme of this exhibit is to "share the timeless truths of war...by creating a space for combat veterans to reveal the emotional realities of war through their visual art. Art can be abstract or literal, painting or sculpture, - whatever format best suits the veterans need for uncensored expression, anonymity, safety or distance".

This show gives the viewer the opportunity to open to the rarely encountered emotional realities of war that only the veteran artist can offer.
The Art Blast runs from 10/09 - 10/11. That's 3 days! You won’t want to miss it!
